The change takes under a minute in Accounts Center, but it locks you out of another change for 60 days. Check the spelling before you save, and use a name that matches your ID so Facebook doesn't reject it.
Your display name, the one friends see on your profile, is not the same as your username, the facebook.com/yourname address.
Facebook's published instructions cover the desktop site, and the app follows the same route through Accounts Center.
