You don't need a scanner or an extra app: Google Drive on Android and the Notes app on iPhone both scan and save a PDF. With good light and a flat page, the result is fine for email, a landlord, or a job application.
Google Drive has a built-in scanner. According to Google's help page, this is how it works:

The app fixes the crop, but it can't rescue a bad photo. A few habits help:
Name the file something you will recognize later, like "lease-agreement-2026" rather than "Scan 1". In Drive you set the name and folder when you save.
