Starlink Mobile: SpaceX Buys Spectrum to Become a US Carrier

What this means for you

Nothing changes for your phone plan today, since the deal still needs FCC approval. If it goes through, the goal is for the phone you already own to connect to a satellite network, even indoors, with no new hardware.

What SpaceX is buying

The deal is with Grain Management and covers 800 MHz spectrum across the entire country, up to 14 MHz of paired channels.

The second-generation satellites

The FCC approved 15,000 Gen2 Starlink Mobile satellites, tuned for 2 GHz spectrum. SpaceX says they offer more than 100 times the bandwidth of the current generation.

Why two kinds of spectrum

A simple physical trade-off explains the design. Higher frequencies, like 2 GHz, move a lot of data but lose strength going through a roof or a wall.

What came before and who competes

Starlink Mobile isn't starting from zero.

Who could feel the competition

If the plan moves forward, Starlink Mobile would go head to head with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.
