Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Can Now Power Your Home in a Blackout

IntelliTechs ยท Oct 07, 2026

What this means for you

If you own a Powerwall 3 and are ordering a new Model 3 or Model Y, your car can now keep the lights on for more than two days in a blackout.

How it works

Powershare turns the car's battery into backup power for your home. When the grid goes down, a car plugged into your wall charger feeds the house alongside a Powerwall 3 home battery.

What's missing

The Model S and Model X are not included. The Powershare Gateway option, which is sold only for the Cybertruck, isn't available either, so no Powerwall means no home backup.

Late to the party

Electrek points out that Ford has sold the F-150 Lightning with vehicle-to-home power since 2022, at 9.6 kW, and that GM offers it across several models.

Should you order now or wait?

This part is our opinion, not Tesla's.
