With backup on, a new phone or a lost one doesn't mean losing years of chats and photos. Take a minute today to check that yours is active and when it last ran.
A backup saves your chats and the media in them. You choose whether to include videos, which makes the file much bigger, and whether to keep your status archive.
Three decisions determine whether your backup is useful. The first is the destination: Google Drive on Android, iCloud on iPhone.
Before you start, WhatsApp needs an active Google Account on the phone, Google Play services installed, and free space on both the phone and your Google Account.
On iPhone you need to be signed in with your Apple ID and have iCloud Drive turned on. WhatsApp's current help page lists iOS 12 or newer.
Lack of space is the most common reason a backup never finishes, and each system works differently.
