You can build a to-do list or an item tracker right inside the cells, with no macros and no Developer tab. If the Checkbox button is missing in your copy of Excel, the older method still works.
Microsoft's instructions come down to two steps, and they are the same on Windows and Mac:
Under the square there is a logical value. Ticked, the cell equals TRUE. Unticked, it equals FALSE. Any formula that points to that cell gets one of the two.
Microsoft says that as of January 2026 the feature was fully rolled out to Current Channel, Monthly Enterprise Channel and Semi-Annual Channel users on Windows and Mac desktop.
