If you just want a break from Instagram, deactivating is the safe route: your profile is hidden and returns when you log back in. Deleting is different: after a waiting period, it can't be undone.
They are two very different actions, and Instagram's menu puts them side by side.
The path runs through Accounts Center, the panel that gathers settings for accounts tied to Meta, Instagram's parent company.
If the app doesn't show the options, use a browser:
On a computer the route is the same Accounts Center path: log in, open the settings menu, go to Accounts Center and reach Deactivation or deletion.
The Help Center says your photos, comments and likes stay hidden until you reactivate by logging back in.
