Want a break from social media without losing everything you built? On Instagram you can deactivate your account temporarily. Nobody can see your profile while it’s deactivated, and when you return your photos, followers and the accounts you follow are still there. This guide shows how to do it on your phone and on a computer, and how not to mix it up with deleting your account.
Deactivate vs. delete: what’s the difference?
They are two very different actions, and Instagram’s menu puts them side by side.
- Deactivating hides your profile and can be undone. You log back in with your username and password.
- Deleting is permanent. According to a report from CNN Brasil, a deleted account can’t be recovered, so save your photos and information first.
If you are unsure, deactivating is the safer choice. One of the guides we checked says Instagram won’t delete a deactivated account without the owner’s authorization, even after more than a year of inactivity.
How to deactivate in the app (iPhone and Android)
The path runs through Accounts Center, the panel that gathers settings for accounts tied to Meta, Instagram’s parent company. Menu names can shift slightly between app versions.
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom right corner.
- Tap the menu (the three lines) and open Settings and privacy.
- Tap Accounts Center, then Personal details.
- Choose Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the account you want to deactivate.
- Choose Deactivate account, tap Continue, and confirm with your password.
Watch out: the same path in the app also offers Delete account. For a break, always pick deactivate.
How to deactivate in your phone’s browser
If the app doesn’t show the options, use a browser:
- Go to instagram.com and log in.
- Open settings from your profile and tap See more in Accounts Center.
- Go to Personal details, then Account ownership and control.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion and select the account.
- Choose Deactivate account, tap Continue, and confirm your password.
How to deactivate on a computer
On a computer it’s more direct, because there is a dedicated page for the request:
- Open instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/temporary/ and log in.
- Pick a reason for deactivating.
- Enter your password and confirm with Temporarily Deactivate Account.
What happens while your account is deactivated
No one can see your profile. Your posts, followers and the accounts you follow are kept, not erased. One rule to know: according to Buscapé, you can only do this once a week. So if you deactivate and then reactivate, you’ll have to wait before deactivating again.
How to reactivate Instagram
Reactivating is simple: open the app and log in with your username and password. Buscapé reports that your posts, followers and followed accounts are all still in place.
Before you deactivate
- Tell close friends, especially if you use Instagram to chat or for work.
- Back up important photos and videos to your phone or the cloud (our WhatsApp backup guide shows the idea). This matters most if you’re thinking about deleting for good.
- Check which apps you sign into with your Instagram account, since they may depend on that login.
- Take a moment to review your account security. Our guide on two-step verification for WhatsApp shows the same habit on another Meta app.
