Geely says it will sell cars in Canada under its own brand starting in 2027. The company has begun setting up local operations and recruiting dealers, and it has launched geely.ca. Models, prices and dealer locations will come closer to launch, according to Geely Auto Canada.

What Geely said

Bryan Wu, managing director of Geely Auto Canada, called the move “a long-term commitment” and said trust is earned over time. The company says it is working with “highly trusted and experienced partners,” which points to franchised dealers rather than direct sales.

No models are confirmed. Electrek notes that the EX5 electric SUV (sold in China as the Galaxy E5) and the Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid are sold in markets like Australia and the UK and would be natural fits. That’s the outlet’s guess, not an announcement.

Why Canada, and why now

In January 2026, Canada cut its 100% tariff on Chinese EVs as part of a deal with Beijing, in which China also lowered tariffs on Canadian canola. The deal sets a quota of 49,000 China-built EVs a year at a 6.1% tariff, effective March 1. Anything above that still faces the 100% surtax.

Per Electrek, permits are issued in two six-month periods, first come, first served. The current period runs through February 28, 2027, and covers 33,397 vehicles. Electrek expects Geely’s first cars to fall under the second quota year.

The shift fits the trend we covered when gas cars fell below 50% of global sales. There’s a US angle too. Electrek says US connected-vehicle rules have already kept Polestar out of the American market, and Canada is effectively Geely’s only North American route for its own brand.

The company behind it

Geely Auto Group sold over 3.02 million vehicles in 2025, about 1.69 million of them battery-electric or plug-in hybrid, and has passed 2.23 million so far in 2026 through September. Its brands are Geely, Zeekr and Lynk & Co. Parent Zhejiang Geely Holding also owns Volvo Cars, Polestar and Lotus.

Rival BYD plans 20 Canadian dealerships, starting in Toronto.

When it arrives

First cars in 2027, with no date or price. Electrek’s Fred Lambert finds it odd to announce a market entry this early without a product, and thinks Geely needs dealers before cars.
