Apple Intelligence is coming to China with iOS 27.3, expected in December, starting with basic features such as photo editing. Bloomberg reports that Alibaba’s models will power it, and that Siri AI, the AI-upgraded assistant, is not part of the package. The Chinese version will have fewer features than the one sold in the US.

What will iPhone users in China get?

According to MacRumors, the launch covers a basic set of Apple Intelligence tools. Bloomberg, as relayed by GSMArena, says Alibaba’s Qwen models will likely handle most general features, while its Tongyi Wanxiang models would take care of image editing. MacRumors adds that Apple also partnered with Baidu.

The partnerships are a practical requirement. China restricts foreign AI technology, so Apple needed local partners to operate there. In Western markets, the company uses Google’s Gemini. It is a different engine under the same product name, with very different rules around it.

What is missing?

Based on the reports, these features will not launch in China:

  • Siri AI;
  • Image Playground, because of local laws;
  • the newer version of Genmoji;
  • some text generation tools, which will be limited in certain apps.

GSMArena notes that, per Bloomberg, the limits come from local regulation rather than technical constraints. In plain terms, the hardware can run the features, but the law decides what gets switched on.

Which iPhones and when?

Based on the network access permits Apple received, MacRumors says the devices covered include the iPhone Duo, the iPhone 18 Pro and earlier iPhones. The reports do not list every model or the supported languages. iOS 27.3 is expected in December.

Apple got initial clearance in July 2026 but needed extra approval for a consumer launch. MacRumors also says Apple must let the Chinese government approve ongoing updates to the AI models, which could make new features arrive more slowly than elsewhere.

What about Siri AI?

Siri AI is also unavailable in the European Union on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, according to GSMArena. Macs and Vision Pro in the EU can use it when their language is supported. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman advises not to expect Siri AI soon in China or the EU.

For US readers, the takeaway is that AI on the iPhone is not uniform. Features shown in a keynote can arrive late or not at all in certain countries. If you travel or buy a phone abroad, check which Apple Intelligence tools are actually enabled in that region and language, because support does not follow the hardware automatically.

Why does it matter outside China?

The case shows a pattern: Apple adapts the product to what each government allows, with different partners in each region.

If you follow the iPhone Duo, our look at how Apple opened App Store submissions for foldable-ready apps shows how the company is preparing its software side. Siri also sits at the center of the smart home plans covered in our Welcome Home event preview. AI becomes one more layer that varies by country. This also affects resale and gifting: a phone bought in one region may not unlock the same AI tools when used in another. The practical advice is simple: when you compare phones, compare the feature list for your own market, not only the global announcement.
