Apple is now accepting apps optimized for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, ahead of the device’s launch on Friday, October 23. The announcement went out to developers on Monday and shows how Apple wants the larger inner display used from day one.

What Apple announced

Developers can submit iPhone Duo apps for App Store approval right away. According to MacRumors, only apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later can resize dynamically to fill the whole inner display. Apple also released Xcode 27.1, the developer tool used to build and test them.

Apps that make the jump get an “optimized for iPhone Duo” badge on their App Store page, per 9to5Mac. Apple is also providing design templates, guidance and an asset library in App Store Connect, the developer dashboard, to organize images and previews, according to MacMagazine.

The problem of apps not adapting to new form factors isn’t only Apple’s: Google also admitted trouble with some Android apps on Intel Googlebooks.

What happens to apps that aren’t updated

You won’t be left without your apps. Existing App Store apps run on the iPhone Duo automatically. The catch is that unoptimized apps show black borders around them instead of filling the inner display. Expect an uneven start: apps from big companies tend to adapt quickly, while smaller ones may take longer.

Dates to mark

  • October 16: iPhone Duo pre-orders begin, per MacRumors.
  • October 23: launch and in-store availability.
  • April 2027: from then on, every app submitted to the App Store must include iPhone Duo screenshots, per 9to5Mac and MacMagazine.

Price

Apple’s developer announcement didn’t include a price for the device, and the coverage of it doesn’t list one either. We’ll update when Apple confirms US pricing.

Why it matters

Every foldable runs into the same problem: hardware shows up before the apps do. Early foldable buyers have dealt with stretched apps or lots of empty space. By opening submissions early and putting a visible badge in the store, Apple is trying to launch with a prepared catalog, which helps the first impression of the device.

If you already own an iPhone, the takeaway is practical. Before you buy, check whether the apps you rely on most have been updated. Apple has also been using iOS 27 to change other parts of the system, as we covered in our guide to photo texture on the iPhone 18 Pro.
