Mercedes-AMG unveiled the all-electric GT SUV on October 17, 2026, with up to 1,153 hp in the GT 63 trim and DC fast charging of up to 710 kW. The first US dealer deliveries are expected in summer 2027, and Mercedes hasn’t announced US pricing. It’s AMG’s direct answer to the Porsche Cayenne Electric.

What is the AMG GT SUV?

It’s the first full-size SUV AMG has developed entirely in-house. It sits on the AMG.EA electric architecture, the same one under the electric GT 4-Door Coupe, and shares that car’s motors and battery. Mercedes teased a 1,000-plus hp electric AMG SUV back in August 2026.

How much power does it make, and how fast is it?

Three trims are planned for the US. Peak power figures are peaks, and the acceleration times are Mercedes estimates:

Trim Motors Peak power Torque 0-60 mph
GT 63 3 axial-flux 1,153 hp 1,475 lb-ft 2.6 s (2.4 s with 1-ft rollout)
GT 55 3 axial-flux 805 hp 1,372 lb-ft 3.0 s (2.7 s with rollout)
GT 53 2 conventional synchronous 536 hp 590 lb-ft 4.1 s (3.7 s with rollout)

The GT 63 is limited to 168 mph. Continuous output, what the car can sustain, is 711 hp for the GT 63 and GT 55 and 362 hp for the GT 53.

Axial-flux motors are flat, pancake-shaped units that make more power per pound than the radial-flux motors in most EVs. Mercedes bought UK specialist YASA in 2021 to get this technology.

How fast does it charge?

The GT 63 and GT 55 use a 128 kWh usable, 800-volt battery. Peak DC charging is 710 kW, which takes it from 10% to 80% in 12 minutes and adds up to 282 miles of WLTP range in 10 minutes. The smaller 106 kWh GT 53 peaks at 600 kW and goes 10-80% in 11 minutes.

Here’s the catch for US owners: most public fast chargers, including IONNA’s network, are rated at 400 kW. The GT SUV supports five charging standards, NACS among them, so Tesla Supercharger access is possible. The fastest US charger in the pipeline is 750 kW and has slipped to next year, while China already runs 2,250 kW chargers. So the car can take in more power than almost any charger you can plug into today.

The cells are a tall, narrow cylindrical format with an NCMA cathode and silicon anode, cooled by immersion in non-conductive oil. Mercedes claims over 298 Wh/kg at the cell level.

What’s the range?

On the European WLTP cycle, the GT 63 and GT 55 are rated at 385 to 435 miles, and the GT 53 at 371 to 415 miles. EPA numbers, the ones that matter for US buyers, are expected to come in lower. The GT 63 weighs 5,942 lb and has a drag coefficient of 0.27.

What else comes with it?

  • Simulated engine sound: V8 recordings on the GT 63 and GT 55, a six-cylinder on the GT 53, in AMGFORCE Sport+ mode with paddle-triggered virtual shifts. A “Silent” setting turns it off.
  • Rear-axle steering up to 6 degrees on every trim.
  • AMG Active Ride Control+ on the GT 63, which swaps mechanical anti-roll bars for active hydraulics and air springs.
  • A 14-inch center screen merged with a 10.2-inch driver display, plus an optional 14-inch passenger screen.
  • Five seats, 21.4 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats and a 2.8 cubic foot frunk.

How does it compare with the Porsche Cayenne Electric?

Using each automaker’s own figures:

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SUV Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric
Peak power 1,153 hp 1,139 hp
0-60 mph (1-ft rollout) 2.4 s (est.) 2.4 s
Top speed 168 mph 162 mph
Battery 128 kWh usable 113 kWh
Max DC charging 710 kW 400 kW
10-80% charge 12 min Under 16 min
US price Not announced $163,000

Acceleration is a tie on paper. The Mercedes wins on battery size and charging speed, and the price will decide the rest. Mercedes also recently dropped the EQE and Maybach EQS SUV from its 2027 US lineup, which leaves the GT SUV as the brand’s flagship electric performance play.

Should you wait for it?

If you’re a Cayenne Electric shopper, it’s worth waiting for the GT SUV’s price before signing anything, since the two are this close on power and speed. Just don’t count on 710 kW in daily life: at a typical 400 kW public charger you’ll be limited by the station, not the car.
