Samsung is rolling out Android 17 with One UI 9 to the Galaxy S23 series. According to 9to5Google, the stable update reached South Korea about a week ago and is now available in Europe, and it “should land in the US and other markets any day now.” This is the last major Android update the S23 is expected to receive.
Which phones get One UI 9 now?
The S23 is part of a wider push. 9to5Google reports that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are getting One UI 9 in South Korea and Europe, with more regions to follow. On the midrange side, stable updates are rolling out for the Galaxy A57, A37, A27, A56 and A36. If you have a newer flagship, we covered how Samsung’s Android 17 rollout works on the Galaxy S24, and the pattern is the same: slow waves by country and carrier, not a single launch day.
What’s new in One UI 9 on the S23?
Oficina da Net, a Brazilian outlet, lists these changes for the S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra:
- more Quick Panel customization options;
- Samsung DeX improvements (DeX turns your phone into a desktop-style workspace when connected to a monitor);
- usability changes in Samsung Notes;
- a new privacy indicator for location access;
- AI features;
- accessibility improvements.
Tecnoblog says the expansion of Galaxy AI is the headline addition for the Brazilian S23. None of the sources spell out which AI tools are new on the S23, so check Settings after updating to see what appeared.
How big is the download?
On beta-enrolled phones in South Korea, the package is about 484 MB (483.81 MB, firmware S91xNKSU8GZIF), according to Oficina da Net. That is small because those phones already run a test build and only download the difference. If you are coming from the previous stable release, expect a much bigger file. For the S24, for example, the full jump ran around 3.8 GB. We could not confirm the exact size for US S23 units, so keep several gigabytes of free storage.
How do you update a Galaxy S23?
- Connect to Wi-Fi and keep the battery above about 50 percent, ideally plugged in.
- Back up your photos and important apps with Samsung Cloud or Google. If you plan to switch phones instead, see our guide to transferring data to a new phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- Wait for the install and the restart. The phone is unusable while it finishes.
If the option does not show up yet, the rollout has not reached you. Samsung releases in stages. Checking again in a few days usually works.
Is this really the S23’s last big update?
Yes, based on what Oficina da Net reports: the S23 launched with Android 13 and has now used up the four OS upgrades Samsung promised. One UI 9 on Android 17 closes that chapter. The same outlet says the phone will probably miss the future One UI 9.5, though Samsung has not confirmed that. In practice, nothing breaks. You stop getting new Android versions, so there is no reason to rush an upgrade just because of this release.
Should you install it today?
For most people, yes. It brings privacy and accessibility improvements, and it is your last chance to run the newest Android on this phone. If you rely on the S23 for work, a sensible compromise is to wait a few days and see whether early users report bugs, since big updates sometimes need a quick fix from Samsung afterward. Either way, do not skip the backup.
