Nothing began rolling out the stable version of Nothing OS 5.0, based on Android 17, to the Phone (3) on Monday, October 12. The flagship is first in line, following a beta program that began in August.

What’s new in Nothing OS 5.0

Nothing describes the release as a redesigned Launcher, a Micrographics clock face and a refreshed design system. It also lists deeper personalization, smoother performance and improved Essential AI tools, on top of Android 17’s own features.

According to Android Police, the company tweaked typography, icons, spacing, materials and motion. Settings and the status bar are cleaner, the Camera app has updated icons and simpler controls, and the Gallery gets refinements for sorting photos.

On the home screen, icons can blend into your wallpaper using transparent details and subtle color tints. There are new widgets too, including a Collector widget that turns your own photos into widget icons. The coverage doesn’t spell out which specific Android 17 features came along.

How to install it

Head to Settings > System > System update. Because the rollout is gradual, the prompt may take a while to show up on your phone. Before updating, charge the battery and back up anything important. If you need a hand with that, our guide on how to transfer data to a new phone covers the copy options.

Schedule for other Nothing phones

Nothing says the schedule hasn’t changed and that stable rollouts run through mid-January 2027:

Device Timing
Phone (3) October 12 (now)
Phone (4a) Pro and Phone (4a) Early November
Phone (3a) Pro and Phone (3a) Early November
Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus Mid-November
Phone (3a) Lite Late December
Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro Mid-January

The company adds that Android 17 will expand to more devices in the coming months. The sources don’t cover US availability or pricing for these models, so check with Nothing or your retailer before counting on the update.

Why it matters

Nothing is one of the brands that stands out most for how its Android looks, and shipping the stable build not long after the beta suggests the schedule is holding. Android 17 is reaching other brands as well: Samsung has begun its own rollout, as we covered in One UI 9 for the Galaxy S24. Staying current also matters for security and app compatibility, as the case of WhatsApp blocking logins on outdated phones showed.
