When your battery dies before the day is over, the phone itself is rarely to blame. It is usually a mix of a bright screen, apps working in the background and charging habits that wear the battery down. Most of that can be fixed in settings. This guide pulls together what Apple and Google officially recommend, with the menu paths.

Menu names vary a bit by brand and software version. The Android paths below are for Pixel phones; on Samsung and others, look for “Battery” in Settings.

1. Find what is draining your battery

Start with a diagnosis. On an iPhone, open Settings > Battery to see which apps use the most power. Apple names three common culprits: Background App Refresh, Location Services and frequent notifications. If an app you barely use sits at the top, restrict its permissions or delete it.

2. Lower the screen brightness

The display is often the biggest drain. On an iPhone, dim the screen in Control Center or turn on Auto-Brightness under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. On Android, look for the brightness controls in your phone’s display settings.

3. Use Low Power Mode (iPhone)

Your iPhone offers it at 20% and 10% battery, but you can turn it on earlier in Settings > Battery. According to Apple, it lowers brightness, limits performance, reduces animations, pauses background downloads and turns off AirDrop, iCloud sync and Continuity. Calls, messages, email and internet access still work. It switches off automatically once the phone charges.

4. Keep Adaptive Battery on (Android)

On a Pixel, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery and turn on “Use Adaptive Battery” if it is off. Google warns that it may reduce performance and delay notifications. After setting up a new phone or doing a factory reset, optimization can take up to a few weeks to reach full effect.

5. Keep battery optimization on for apps

Also on Android, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps, tap an app, choose App battery usage and keep Optimized selected. Allowing unrestricted background use can make that app drain more battery. Some essential services do not offer the option.

6. Use Wi-Fi instead of cellular

Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less power than cellular data. In areas with weak signal, Airplane mode helps, since the phone stops constantly hunting for a tower.

7. Turn on optimized charging

On an iPhone, the feature lives in Settings > Battery and learns your daily charging routine. The goal is to reduce the time the battery spends at a high charge, which helps preserve its lifespan. If you charge overnight, it is worth leaving on.

8. Watch the heat

This is the tip that protects your battery most over the long run. Apple says the ideal temperature range is 62° to 72° F, and that the phone operates between 32° and 95° F. Above 95° F, battery capacity can drop permanently, and charging in the heat makes it worse. A few habits help:

  • do not leave the phone in the sun, on a car dashboard or at the beach;
  • take the case off while charging if the phone gets hot;
  • avoid heavy gaming while it is plugged in.

Cold also affects it, but only temporarily: battery life drops and returns to normal once the phone warms up.

9. Charge the right way

If you charge an iPhone over USB from a computer that is off or asleep, the battery can actually drain. Use a wall outlet or a powered-on computer. Keep your software current too: on an iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

10. Storing a phone for a long time

If a device will sit unused, Apple recommends charging to about 50%, powering it off and storing it somewhere cool and dry, below 90° F. For storage over six months, recharge to about 50% every six months. Never store it fully charged or fully drained.

Frequently asked questions

Does closing apps save battery?

The guidance from Apple and Google focuses on controlling what runs in the background, not closing apps by hand. Adjust Background App Refresh, location access and notifications.

Does Low Power Mode damage the battery?

No. It is an official iPhone feature and turns off on its own when the phone charges. It only limits performance and some functions while active.

What is the ideal temperature for a phone battery?

According to Apple, 62° to 72° F. The phone operates between 32° and 95° F, and above that the battery can lose capacity permanently.

How do I know if my iPhone battery is worn out?

Open Settings > Battery and look for battery health, which shows capacity compared with when the battery was new. If the number is low and the phone cannot last the day, check with an authorized service provider.
