Deleting a photo by accident happens to everyone, and the good news is that in most cases it doesn’t vanish right away. Both Google Photos and the iPhone’s Photos app keep deleted items in a trash for a while. This guide shows how to get them back on both systems, what to do if time ran out, and how to avoid the problem next time.

Why a deleted photo may still be there

When you delete a photo, your phone doesn’t erase it immediately. It moves to a temporary area and is removed for good only after a set number of days. That’s why the golden rule is to act fast: the less time has passed, the better your chances. Once an item leaves the trash, there is no undo button.

How to recover photos on Android (Google Photos)

Google Photos has its own trash. According to Google’s help page, you can restore an item if it went to Trash less than 30 days ago and you haven’t emptied Trash or permanently deleted it from there. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. At the bottom, tap Collections, then Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want back. For several items, tap the others afterward.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore.

The photo returns to the albums it was in, your Google Photos library and your phone’s gallery app. The retention period shown can vary depending on whether the item was backed up, so read the notice on the Trash screen itself.

One important detail: items permanently deleted straight from your phone’s gallery app can’t be recovered through Google Photos. Google also warns that if you’re inactive in Google Photos for two years or more, your content may be deleted.

How to recover photos on iPhone (Photos app)

On iPhone, deleted photos go to the Recently Deleted album and stay there for 30 days. Apple says that after 30 days they’re permanently deleted and you can’t get them back. To restore one:

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Swipe up and tap Recently Deleted under Utilities.
  3. Unlock the album with Face ID or Touch ID.
  4. Tap the photo or video, then tap Recover.
  5. To recover several at once, tap Select, choose your items, tap More, then Recover. Confirm.

How to recover through iCloud.com

If your iPhone isn’t handy, you can do it from a computer. Sign in at iCloud.com, click Photos, and select Recently Deleted in the sidebar. If the sidebar is hidden, use the option to show it. Pick the photo and click Recover. The window is the same 30 days.

What if the time limit has passed?

Then the trash can’t help, but you still have a few options:

  • Look for copies. If you sent the photo by text, email or a messaging app, the other person may still have the file. Shared albums keep copies too.
  • Check for a backup. An older cloud or computer backup might hold the photo. Our guide to backing up WhatsApp chats shows how that process works for media in your conversations.
  • Be wary of miracle apps. Recovery programs don’t always bring a file back, because the phone may have overwritten that space. If you try one, download it only from a trusted source and avoid paying before you see what it actually finds.

How to avoid losing photos again

  • Keep automatic backup turned on, in Google Photos or iCloud.
  • Before emptying the trash or freeing up space, check what’s in it, and copy photos to the cloud or a computer instead of deleting them.
  • When switching phones, follow the steps to transfer data to a new phone and only wipe the old one afterward.

Sometimes on Android, but with no guarantee, since the phone may have already reused that space. Try the trash and your backups first.
