To find your own phone number on an iPhone, open Settings > Phone and look next to My Number. On Android, open Settings > About phone and check Phone number or SIM status. Both take a few taps, work without any balance on the line, and show both numbers if the phone has two SIMs.
If the field is blank, the fixes further down cover the usual reasons, from a SIM that is not seated properly to a carrier that simply does not store the number on the card.
iPhone: Settings, Contacts or Siri
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Phone.
- With a single SIM, your number appears next to My Number.
- With two SIMs, tap My Number and pick Primary or Secondary to see each line.
There are two alternatives. You can open the Phone app, go to Contacts and look at My Card at the top of the list, or open the Contacts app and do the same. Be careful with that route: the card is filled in by hand, so it only helps if you know whoever set it up typed the right digits. You can also ask Siri, “What is my phone number?”
Android: Settings and Contacts
- Swipe down from the top of the screen once or twice.
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll down and tap About phone.
- Look for your number under Phone number or SIM status. A dual-SIM phone lists both.
Menu names change from one manufacturer to another, so if About phone does not show it, look at the Phone app or at the network, carrier or SIM settings. Another Android route, according to US Mobile, goes through About phone > Status, where you scroll down to see the number. In the Contacts app, tapping your profile icon or name at the top should also show the number under your name. As on the iPhone, a contact card can hold a stale number if someone typed it by hand.
What to do if the number is blank
The number shown in Settings comes from the SIM, so a blank field points either to the SIM or to a number the carrier did not store there. Here is the order we would follow.
- Check the SIM. US Mobile notes that a faulty or badly installed SIM can trigger a “Phone number not found” warning. Power the phone off, take the SIM out, put it back and restart. The same source says eSIMs should not run into this problem.
- Try the other places. If Settings is empty, check Contacts (the profile card), then the Phone app. On an iPhone you can also ask Siri.
- Use your carrier’s account. US Mobile points to the carrier’s online dashboard, where every number on the account is listed. Sign in on a computer, or in the carrier’s app, and the line is there.
We did not find a verified dial code that works across US carriers, so we are not listing one here. The account page or app is the safe route.
Dual SIM and eSIM: which number is which?
Phones with two lines are where most confusion happens. On an iPhone, the My Number screen lets you choose between the primary and secondary line, and the Android About phone screen lists both. Pick one line at a time and read the number on screen before you copy it anywhere.
An eSIM does not need a different method: US Mobile says the “number not found” warning should not affect it. Our guide to transferring data to a new phone covers what moves with you and what you need to set up again.
A quick sanity check before you share it
Once you have the number, test it. Ask a friend to call or text you and tell them to read back the number shown on their own screen, or call a friend and read the digits that appear on theirs. If the two match what Settings showed, you have the right line. This takes a minute and is worth doing on a dual-SIM phone, where it is easy to copy the secondary line by mistake.
When you will actually need the number
People usually look it up for one of a few reasons: filling in a form, setting up a messaging app on a new phone, giving the number to a friend, or checking which line is in which device. In every case, read it off the Settings screen instead of typing it from memory.
If you are looking because something feels wrong, such as texts you never sent, read how to tell if your phone was cloned or SIM swapped.
FAQ
Can I find my number without any balance or data?
Yes. Settings and Contacts read the information stored on the phone, so no balance is needed. The carrier’s online account does need an internet connection, which you can get from Wi-Fi.
Why does my iPhone show a blank My Number field?
The number is assigned by your carrier and read from the SIM. A blank field can mean the SIM is not seated well or that the number is not stored there. Reseat the SIM, then check Contacts or your carrier account.
Is the number in My Card always correct?
No. It is typed in manually, so verify it against Settings or your carrier account before sharing it.
